   This student success statement from Carlyle is very meaningful. He used a simile in order to emphasize this quote. A rudder is a very useful object that helps maintain the boat going. It is a very significant part of a ship or boat. He reflects and compares this to an individual without a goal. If a person doesn’t have a goal, they won't achieve or go anywhere in life just like the ship without a rudder. In order to go somewhere and be successful in your future, you must have a goal to start with. Your goal(s) will take anywhere. A ship that has a rudder will move and go any place desired. It is practically the same thing. For instance, if you want to go to a great university such as UCLA or any other ones, you must begin with a goal. Your goal might be having straight A’s. This goal will then slowly develop and change you as an individual. You will than starting moving and moving and reach great places. A ship must have a rudder to go to high places as well such as across the ocean. You are the ship. Your goal is a rudder. You must have it, because it will help you in the future.This reflects to my goals, because one of my goals is to attend to a great university. That is my goal so I will slowly move towards that and accomplish it. That is why Thomas Carlyle stated this quote to help all of us to obtain a goal in order for us to be successful.

 

         Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day Weekend was very fascinating to me. On Friday,  my brother came home from UCLA and we just talked about how he is doing in school and and the life of living there. We had a movie night and watched numerous movies. It was a pretty great night. On Saturday, I went to practice basketball with my dad at the park in 5:00 in the morning. We decided we would go early, because there wouldn't be as much of people than the afternoon. Later, my family and I went to the mall to buy some basketball shoes for me and my sister. We couldn’t find any, however, we did find other good shoes that aren’t sports related. Later that day, my dad went to drop me off to my friend's house for her quinceanera practice. It was very fun at practice, but tiring as well. After practice, I watched netflix for the rest of the day. I was trying to catch up on the show called Riverdale. The next day, we went to church early in the morning as usual and get breakfast. After that we visited Memorial Park Cemetery. We walked around and I notice that there were a lot of flags of the U.S next to a lot of graves. We inspected a little more and notice that these flags were for the ones who served in the army or military. I saw some graves where the person who died in World War 1 and 2. We honor these people by having some silence of respect. The environment around that area is very calm and peaceful. You can hear the birds chirping and butterflies roaring in thin air. On Monday, In didn’t do much. I finished my 10-paragraph essay for my english class. I read a book called “ If I Stay”, which was very interesting. And that was my Memorial Day weekend.

This quote by Alan Paton is concise and meticulous. What he is trying to tell us in this statement is that the only way to recover when you are hurt, is to forgive. You have to forgive on what hurt you and than you will recover from that injury. Forgiveness is when you stop feeling angry or resentful toward someone for an offense or a mistake.  For instance, if you did something bad to another person, but it is too late to do what you did. You now feel very  bad about it. The only way to feel better is to seek for forgiveness. In order to do that, you must apologize and mean it. Sometimes, forgiving can be hard. Especially when you are extremely hurt. But if you don’t forgive, you will be stuck in a little hole and no where to go. You will be drowning on your emotions and your conscience will bother you often. In order to get out of that, you must forgive and be free. After forgiving, you feel relief and have freedom all to yourself and it feels good. Another example would be when a guy who got a DUI manslaughter for drinking and driving crashed into a car whom the victims died. The parents of these victims was very upset and had hatred among the guy. However, she later discovers that she can’t be angry at him. Therefore, she found forgiveness. And she felt free.

                                       Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a holiday in which we honor for those who unfortunately died in active military service. Memorial Day is observed on May 30, but now it is officially known on the last Monday of May. Luckily, there are some ways to show honor and respect for those who died on Memorial Day. For instance, you may like to visit a Massachusetts Veteran’s Cemetery. You can leave flowers on their grave. Another way would be to “fly the flag”. You can hang the American Flag to show honor on Memorial Day. Some other ways consist of making a soldier’s day by writing a thank you card to send overseas, go to a Memorial Day parade, etc. Memorial Day has some fun facts that we all should know. Memorial Day also marks the beginning of the summer vacation season while labor day marks the end! Also, it’s common for volunteers to place the American Flag on graves in the national cemeteries. Another fact is that in 1996, President Johnson named Waterloo, New York  as the original place of Memorial Day. What is a mystery is that the true origins of who held the first Memorial Day celebration is a debated subject. I would like to do many things on Memorial Day in order to show respect and kindness for those who passed away as a true hero. I would like to go the closest cemetery for veterans and bring an abundance of flowers to put among their graves. I would also like to donate to a charity that supports our military. The last thing I would also like to do is to have a moment of silence at church to pray for those who are in the military and for those who passed away.

Reflection: Memorial Day for me is a time where we all should really honor our veterans for their hard work to protect our country. It is very significant for us to show respect to the veterans, because they are true heroes. I feel that there isn’t much honor and respect going on Memorial Day. Many people see this day as a day where you don’t have to go to school or work and it is fun. However, that is not the true meaning of that day. This day is for the veterans who unfortunately passed away and deserved better. They put their life on risk for all of us and to protect us. This takes a lot of courage and bravery. Therefore, we all should at least take a moment of silence on that day for the true heroes that died for us. This is what I feel about Memorial Day.

Student Success Statement

“ Dare to do right” - Rex D. Pinegar

This student success statement is very stupendous. What Pinegar means by this quote is that  there many dares that good but also that are bad. However, you should always dare to do the right thing such as doing their homework, not drinking alcohol, not doing drugs, etc. Rex D. Pinegar had his own experience with this statement. He was dared to do something outrageous and very dangerous. Once he did the dare, he had to pay the consequences. He had learned his lesson on this experience. This reflects upon the statement, because he wasn’t dare to do the right. He should should've thought this through and say to himself that this wouldn’t be the right thing to do. According to his letter that he sent for all of his friends, he states that when doing a bad dare, it makes you “strong” and “brave”. In the other hand, if you don’t do the dare, that will make you “weak” and “not so brave”. The brave thing to do would be to not accept the dare because it is the right thing to do. An example that interferes with this statement would be if a girl is dared to smoke more than 5 cigarettes by the end of this week. The girl knows this is dangerous and not so smart to do it, so she dared to do the right because it is the right thing to and that is true bravery. Rex wants all of us to know that if we dare to do the right always, then we won’t have any consequences after.

Duties and Responsibilities: A speech language pathologist is a specialist that helps patients who have problems with their speech and help prevent communication and swallowing disorders in patients. Their responsibility is to diagnose and treat patients who are suffering from stutters and as well as vocal and cognitive communication impairments. Their duties consists of conducting tests and provide therapy that are designed for individual clients’ needs. They also keep long-term records on their patients in order to help them with their difficulties. They also identify the problem whether it's a swallowing disorder or if it’s dysphagia. This helps them to assess and diagnose the disorder and come up with a special therapy. Finally, they counsel patients and families on how to cope with communication and swallowing disorders.

Education: In order to become a speech-language pathologist, you must follow the education requirements. Speech-language pathologist typically need at least a master’s degree. Reflect: I think I would like to be this kind of pathologist, because my cousin use to had speech and communication problems. Then this specialist helped her by special therapies and strategies that actually help her. I would love to help people like that and better their communication or speech.

  Brooke is a girl that is 6 feet tall  who stands tall in what she believes in. She always stands out in the hallways or whenever her friends see her from far. But her height is not the only thing that stands out. Her caring, friendly, and nice attitude is what stands out to a lot of people. She helps one of her friends to not cheat and teach her instead. This young woman doesn't drink nor curses. She chooses the right 24/7. And that is what makes her stand out. She stated that she stands out for what she believes in. She is quite different.

“ Dare to stand alone.”- Thomas S. Monson

This quote by Thomas S. Monson states that at time of need to choosing the right, we need to stand alone. This is very powerful, because it demonstrates that it is OK to stand alone , because it shows everyone that you have a good character within you. For example, if you are in a situation where you are in a party but your friends are doing alcohol and smoking, then you choose the right and back away from them. You might be standing alone, but that is the right thing to do. At the end of the day, you will get the last laugh and you will get save from bigger consequences. That is the only dare that help you in the future and become successful. Sometimes, you don’t have to be in the crowd. It is better if you are alone and doing the right thing than being with people who will get you in trouble. Another example would be if you in a group of “friends” who vandalizing other’s property. No matter what those people tell you, it is best if you ignore them and do the right thing which is not be part of that in any way. Or else, you will face with severe consequences. You might be the only person who chooses the right among other people in a crowd, however, you will stand out and be the only one who will not face the consequences.

Why did you choose this topic?:  University of California Berkeley is an advance public research that is located here in California. I chose this topic, because this is my second option to apply for a university. I have never researched on this university, but my I went to visit once with my older brother and it caught my eye. When I went to visit this school, I saw numerous students going to their classes and others are just exercising . This made me oversee my future and reflect on it. My first option is UCLA, however, if I don’t get accepted , I would face to UC Berkeley

Describe the topic in detail:  UC Berkeley is one of the top 50 best universities statewide! Their acceptance rate increases at a maximum of 17.5 percent. It was first established in March 23, 1868. This school is the oldest of the ten research universities in the University of California system. This university offers a comprehensive doctoral graduate program. UC Berkeley offers 106 Bachelor’s degree, 88 master's degree, 97 research - focused doctoral programs, and 31 professionally focused graduate degrees. They had awarded 7,565 bachelor’s , 2,610 Master’s of or Professional, and 930 Doctoral Degrees in 2013-14.  Unfortunately, they don’t have a medical school. The university offers graduate degrees in Master’s of Art, Master’s of science, Master’s of Fine Art, etc. The 2010 United States National Research Council Rankings identified UC Berkeley as having the highest number of top-ranked doctoral programs in the nation! The campus itself is a very beautiful urban place. It consists of 1,232 acres and have an abundant of halls. Students of UC Berkeley are eligible for a variety of public and private financial aid.  The athletic teams at UC Berkeley are known as the California Golden Bears. They had won national titles in football, men’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s gymnastics, water polo, etc. Some alumni who are notable are: starting quarterback of the Packers Aaron Rodgers, Chris Pine, and United States Women’s soccer team Alex Morgan. Overall, this school is full of great education and people. I hope I will get accepted to this university.

He demonstrates us that if you have the correct goals such as going to a specific college, then if you keep pursuing it , you will most likely accomplish those goals. If you do the right thing at all times, then you will succeed. For instance, if you write on your journey of a list of goals that are good, you should keep following your goals. Then everything will fall into line. In other words, everything will happen as you expected. If you want to go to UCLA, than you must pursue that goals by having good grades, community service hours, studying,etc. Later on the future, you will accomplish that goal and any other goals you have in mind. That is a key to success. The other part on what Dierdorf stated was significant in value. He states that one should always do the right thing, in which that would help you have a successful future. For instance, you are person who studies instead of being in parties. You are a person who never smokes or do alcohol. They consist of many responsibilities. One of their responsibility is to is to provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health condition. Some of their duties consists of:

You must try your very best and work hard in order to become successful. The second tip states that one has follow their passions, what they truly love doing. For example, if you love teaching people new things and whatnot, you must follow that passion and become a teacher. Knowing your passion helps you become successful in life. The third tip is to not chase after money. In other words, do do things just because of the money. It has to come within yourself and that is what makes up a person successful. If you do it for the money, then there are more chances that you won’t that successful, because it is not coming from the heart. Last but not least, the last tip that Riggs mention is to serve others. And to do good things for others in which good things will come back to you as well. Duties and Responsibility: Physical Therapist is a professional in which they help recover patients who are suffering from injuries,illnesses, and surgery. They work together with patients to help them learn how to do use their gross or fine motor skills or any other basic stuff. They prepare their therapy are and obtain all necessary equipment that are used for this special therapy. They observe each patient's’ development on who they improve in each therapy session. One of their duties consists of helping patients move from one area of therapy to another. Reflection: I think I would like to be a physical therapist, because I like the idea of helping other people in getting better. Throughout my experience, I had a knee injury, so I went to physical therapy. There, the physical therapist helped me to learn how to walk slowly and to do other basic stuff such as running. This inspired me, because they helped me a lot so I feel the need to help others who are going through the same thing I went through. I feel that I can make an impact towards others.

This quote from Roosevelt shows us that whenever you are in a scene in which you have to make a decision, the great thing to do in that moment is to do the right thing. This is pretty concise and meticulous, because it just shows all of us that we always have to make the right decision at all times. For instance, if you are in a situation in which you have to confess or lie on something bad you did, the best decision anyone can make is confess your mistake and tell the truth because it is the right thing to do. Sometimes, when you choose the right decision, you will get something good back towards you. Whenever you have to make a tough situation , just do the right thing and choose the right decision. However, if you choose the wrong decision, you might even face up with consequences and it will give you a bad name. Your name has to be something good. Roosevelt states that “in any moment of decision” you have to do the right thing. I emphasize this little phrase, because it is at any time, you need to do the right. No matter how big or small the situation you are in. I believe that making the right decisions in a situation will take you far and help you become a better and successful individual.

This quote by Woodruff demonstrates that you will gain nothing when you do what’s wrong. In other words, if you choose the wrong such as doing drugs, you will gain nothing, because it is not a good thing to do. In the other hand, if you choose the right and you do the right thing, you will gain a lot of things such as pride, gifts, or just something simple but meaningful. But if you do wrong things, there is nothing you will gain. For example, if you sneak out your house to go to a part that contains alcohol or beer, that is a wrongdoing. You will not earn many things nor gain great things in life. Another example would be if you are planning to go to a university some day but you don’t get good grades or you are just doing drugs, you will not gain the opportunity to go that university. You must work hard in order to gain what you want. If you don’t work hard and just choose the wrong things, you won’t make it far and will not gain anything. That is why Woodruff stated this quote to show us that we must do the right things and to work hard and which it will get you far. You will gain many things.

         Pathologist

Duties and Responsibilities: A pathologist are professional physicians that utilize tissues or fluids from the body in order to diagnose or treat diseases. Your duty is to examine fluids such as blood and urine or tissues from biopsies to diagnose any kind of disease. Some of their duties consist of:

• Develop new tests to improve diagnosis of diseases.
• Conduct research and present scientific findings.
• Manage medical laboratories
• Collaborate with surgeons or other professions in order to deal with the disease.

Pathologists are also responsible to study the disease using laboratory methods.

Reflection: I don’t think I would like to be a medical pathologist, because it seems that there is a lot of pressure for a pathologist due to the fact you will need to transport fluids and tissues from the body into the laboratory and examine them very closely in order not to make a mistakes on the examination.

This student success statement by Knox demonstrates to all of us that it is actually good to see when someone shows their good character and steps up to do the right thing and at the right time. For example, the teen , Nash, who is a great golf player, has won the championships. Little did he know, he had one more puts than he should have. Therefore, it is considered cheating. However, Nash knew that and he did the right thing and told them that he should be disqualified. Now this is a good act and showing great character. He did the right thing and at the right time where he noticed that he had more puts. Another example would be if someone observes another person stealing something. The great act to do is to report it and that is the right thing to do. Basically, Knox is telling us that we should do the right thing it is a great moment and that demonstrates who you truly are and what your character tells about you.

  This quote by Karl G. Maeser is very powerful and concise about keeping your word. Maeser is telling us that the true definition of “word of honor” is by keeping it no matter what. You might be attempted to spit it out, however, you must keep your word. Maeser then provides examples of the obstacles you might face such as being place behind the prison walls  that is so high and very sturdy and you can’t go pass it. No matter what, you might escape but you can draw a chalk line across him and have him give his word of honor never to cross it. You mustn't get out of that circle. You gave your word. As Karl states, “ No, never! I’d die first.”  For instance, if you promise to your friend that you will bring her color pencils back by tomorrow and you have them your word, you must never get out of that and keep your word. That is your word of honor and you must keep it no matter what. If you don’t keep your word, you might as well be very sad and disappointed in yourself, because you gave the person your word of honor! This is very significant to others and yourself. Another example would be if you give your word to you mom that you will come home by 10:00. You gave your word/promise to your mom and you mustn't break that promise. If you succeed on arriving at home by 10:00, then you should be proud of yourself, because you didn’t let down on your mom nor to yourself! Like what Karl G. Maeser states, it might be difficult to keep your word of honor, but you will make it to the end and you will never cross the circle.
