A man without a goal is like a ship without a rudder.” - Thomas Carlyle

This student success statement from Carlyle is very meaningful. He used a simile in order to emphasize this quote. A rudder is a very useful object that helps maintain the boat going. It is a very significant part of a ship or boat. He reflects and compares this to an individual without a goal. If a person doesn’t have a goal, they won't achieve or go anywhere in life just like the ship without a rudder. In order to go somewhere and be successful in your future, you must have a goal to start with. Your goal(s) will take anywhere. A ship that has a rudder will move and go any place desired. It is practically the same thing. For instance, if you want to go to a great university such as UCLA or any other ones, you must begin with a goal. Your goal might be having straight A’s. This goal will then slowly develop and change you as an individual. You will than starting moving and moving and reach great places. A ship must have a rudder to go to high places as well such as across the ocean. You are the ship. Your goal is a rudder. You must have it, because it will help you in the future. This reflects to my goals, because one of my goals is to attend to a great university. That is my goal so I will slowly move towards that and accomplish it. That is why Thomas Carlyle stated this quote to help all of us to obtain a goal in order for us to be successful.
